Recent advances in superconducting nanowire single-photon detector technology for exoplanet transit spectroscopy in the mid-infrared

چکیده

The Origins Space Telescope mission concept includes an exoplanet transit spectrometer that requires detector arrays with ultrahigh pixel-to-pixel stability. Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors, or SNSPDs, have the potential to meet these stringent stability requirements due their digital-like output. Traditionally used for applications at near-IR telecom wavelengths, SNSPDs demonstrated near-unity detection efficiencies, ultralow dark-count rates, and high dynamic ranges. Until recently, however, SNSPD operation mid-infrared (mid-IR) wavelengths of interest had not been demonstrated, formats were limited small active areas. Recent advances in fabrication techniques pushed sensitivity beyond 7 ?m enabled millimeter-scale areas kilopixel arrays. We report here on this progress outlook toward developing ultrastable superconducting detectors mid-IR astronomy applications.

Superconducting Nanowire Single photon detector (SNSPD) for Quantum Information

In the beginning of this century, a new type of detector, superconducting nanowire single photon detector (SNSPD or SSPD) joined the family of superconducting sensors and detectors. Soon, it has been turning to be one of the most important players in this family since it surpasses the semiconducting single photon detectors (APD: avalanche photodiode and PMT: photo multiplier tube) with many adv...

Dark counts of superconducting nanowire single-photon detector under illumination.

An abnormal increase in the SDE was observed for superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) when the bias current (I(b)) was close to the switching current (I(sw)). By introducing the time-correlated single-photon counting technique, we investigated the temporal histogram of the detection counts of an SNSPD under illumination. The temporal information helps us to distinguish phot...

A superconducting nanowire single photon detector on lithium niobate.

Superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs) are a key enabling technology for optical quantum information science. In this paper we demonstrate a SNSPD fabricated on lithium niobate, an important material for high speed integrated photonic circuits. We report a system detection efficiency of 0.15% at a 1 kHz dark count rate with a maximum of ~1% close to the critical current at 15...

Polar-azimuthal angle dependent efficiency of different infrared superconducting nanowire single-photon detector designs

The illumination-angle-dependent absorptance was determined for three types of superconducting-nanowire singlephoton detector (SNSPD) designs: 1. periodic bare niobium-nitride (NbN) stripes with dimensions of conventional SNSPDs, 2. the same NbN patterns integrated with ~quarter-wavelength hydrogensilsesquioxane-filled nanocavity, 3. similar cavity-integrated structures covered by a thin gold r...
